There’s a lot to love about the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (review), which is Capital One’s premium personal credit card.

On top of an excellent welcome bonus, the card offers many perks, like a $300 annual travel credit, 10,000 anniversary bonus miles, a Priority Pass membership, access to Capital One Lounges, Plaza Premium lounge access, Hertz President’s Circle elite status, primary rental car coverage, cell phone protection, and more. I applied for this card when it first launched, and was instantly approved.

Arguably the single most impressive aspect of the Venture X is how lucrative it is for authorized users. I’ve never seen a premium credit card that has such valuable and widely useful perks for authorized users, so let me explain in this post why this is so special.

How much does it cost to add Capital One Venture X authorized users?

Capital One Venture X cardmembers can add authorized users to the card at no extra cost. That’s right, you can add friends or family members to your account, and it won’t cost you anything beyond the standard $395 annual fee (Rates & Fees) for the primary cardmember.

You’re probably thinking “Well if it’s not costing anything, then authorized users probably aren’t getting many benefits?” Wrong. And that’s one of the things that makes this card so exceptional.

Venture X authorized users get awesome perks

What benefits do Capital One Venture X authorized users receive?

Authorized users on the Capital One Venture X receive several perks, including:

This is huge, as there’s not a single credit card out there that’s open to new applicants and that lets you add authorized users for free and give them a Priority Pass membership.

In addition to those two primary perks, Capital One Venture X authorized users also receive:

  • Hertz President’s Circle status, offering rental car upgrades and much more
  • The same 2-10x miles per dollar spent on the Capital One Venture X as the primary cardmember; of course the primary cardmember is responsible for paying the bill, but this can be useful for maximizing rewards for family members as well (also note that spending from authorized users counts toward the welcome bonus spending requirement)
  • The same purchase protection offered on account of the Capital One Venture X being a Visa Infinite Card, including trip delay and lost baggage coverage
Earn up to 5x Capital One miles for flight purchases

What benefits don’t Capital One Venture X authorized users receive?

What perks don’t Capital One Venture X authorized users receive?

  • There’s no additional $300 travel credit for authorized users, though spending on an authorized user’s card could count toward the credit
  • There’s no additional TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit for authorized users, though a fee charged to an authorized user’s card could be reimbursed
  • There are no additional 10,000 anniversary bonus miles for authorized users
Authorized users don’t receive an additional annual travel credit

How do you add Capital One Venture X authorized users?

The process of adding Capital One Venture X authorized users to your card is easy. The first option is to add authorized users during the application process. Toward the end of the application you’ll be asked if you want to add additional cardmembers.

If you need a bit more time to think about who you want to add, you can instead add authorized users after you’ve opened your account (this is what I do, because when I’m applying for an account I’m focused on getting approved). Just log into your account, and on the account management page, click on the “I Want To…” button toward the top right of the page.

A window will pop up, and there you’ll want to select the “Add Account User” option, under the “Control Your Card” section.

You can then select the “Access Level” for the user you’re adding:

  • You can designate someone as an “Account Manager,” in which case they will receive their own online log-in and can help you manage the account
  • You can designate someone as an “Authorized User,” in which case they’d only get their own card, but wouldn’t get an online log-in, so couldn’t in any way manage the account

Regardless of which option you choose, you’ll be on the hook for all the charges of your authorized users.

Once you select the type of authorized user you want to add, you’ll just have to share some basic details about them, including their first and last name, phone number, date of birth, and social security number. Adding a social security number is optional if you’re only adding someone as an authorized user rather than as an account manager.

A couple of further things to note about adding authorized users:

  • If an authorized user wants to pick up the Capital One Venture X as a primary cardmember in the future, they’d still be eligible, including for the welcome bonus
  • If authorized users are concerned about their Chase 5/24 status, note that them receiving a card as an authorized user could count as a further credit card toward their 5/24 limit

Does it make sense to add Capital One Venture X authorized users?

The obvious answer is that of course it makes sense to add authorized users to the Capital One Venture X. At no additional cost, you can add authorized users, and they’ll suddenly get airport lounge access and more.

I’m sure everyone has friends and family who will be delighted to be gifted unlimited airport lounge access with Priority Pass and Plaza Premium. This perk is even more awesome for those based at DFW, DEN, and IAD, all of which should have Capital One Lounges by some point in 2023.

I can’t understate how generous it is that Capital One lets you add authorized users to the card at no cost. Just to compare this to some other premium cards offering Priority Pass memberships to authorized users:

To be able to get those perks for authorized users without paying extra is simply unheard of.

Give friends and family members the gift of lounge access

Why you might not want to add Capital One Venture X authorized users…

You probably should add authorized users to the Capital One Venture X, as it costs nothing. But just to play devil’s advocate, let me give an example of why that might not always be the best option, at least for those of us who love maximizing value.

I could add Ford as an authorized user on my card, but instead, he applied for his own card. Why? The way I view it, Venture X is better than breakeven, even just for the primary cardmember. In the long run, the Venture X has a $395 annual fee (Rates & Fees), but the card offers:

  • A $300 annual travel credit through Capital One Travel
  • 10,000 anniversary bonus miles; I value Capital One miles at 1.7 cents each, so to me that’s worth $170

Not even factoring in everything else (like the welcome bonus), the card gets me roughly $470 worth of value every year with a $395 annual fee (Rates & Fees). For those who are engaged in miles & points and value things the way I do, I think there’s value in having people outright get their own card, rather than being added as an authorized user.

So this is a product where I think it can make sense for a couple to each pick up their own card as a primary cardmember, and then you can gift lounge access to a bunch of family members and friends. At least that’s the approach I’ve taken.

The Venture X offers 10K anniversary bonus miles

Bottom line

There are so many things to love about the Capital One Venture X. One of the best things about this card is that you can add authorized users at no extra cost (Rates & Fees).

What makes this so awesome is that authorized users get many of the same perks as the primary cardmember, including a Priority Pass membership, access to Capital One and Plaza Premium Lounges, a great rewards structure, and top-notch purchase protection.

If you’re picking up the Capital One Venture X, do you plan on adding authorized users?

Does VX authorized user get a different card number from primary holder?

  2. Patel Trump. Guest

Is it just me or Hertz Presidents Circle or Capital One Car Rental site does not have much selection?

Capital One Lounges ae a mirage. IAD was promised in Spring 2022, then Summer 2022, now "sometime" in 2023. there is no activity at the lounge space at IAD. No construction. Seems a little "bait and switch" to me.

Can you set a spending limit for your authorized users?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ John Thompson -- I don't believe you can beyond the standard credit limit.

  5. Martin Guest

Once I've added an authorized user, what is the process of getting them a priority pass card?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Martin -- I outlined that process in this post:

    Hi Ben,

    Thanks for excellent , review.
    question though.
I got this card two weeks back and made some appliance purchase .
I raked around 3k , and I was waiting to reach 10k spend to get 100K miles bonus. But I am seeing now some reward miles (around 1.5k) in my online account. so I am confused. is this reward miles in addition to 100K bonus, i get at the end of $10k spending ?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Colombus -- With Capital One, base miles from purchases post almost immediately (rather than at the end of the billing cycle), which is why you're seeing that.

  7. Aj Shaw Guest

Do Authorized Users with limited access still get the priority pass? I want to get one for my son, but want to make sure I can restrict when I have to.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Aj Shaw -- Yep, they sure do!

  8. Ram Guest

Hi Team, Do you think its a good idea to change address to my family member's address, order a AU card for him and then once the card gets delivered, change the address back to mine ?

  9. Wayne Guest

can you add a user from a foreign country? SSN is optional. I see cap one wants a phone number, but couldn't you just add your own? I don't see a place for an address. Does Cap One mail the auth'd user card to the primary card holder?

    1. AK Guest

Yes, I just did this and added my own US phone number. Cap1 won't mail it internationally (I tried); they'll mail it to you and then have you forward it.

How do you link to your Hertz account to take advantage of the President's Circle status?

I applied and received this card largely at Ben's recommendation, and later added an authorized user - and I am glad that I did, but there is one major caveat. Both I and my AU joined priority pass a week or so after receiving our CC's - it wasn't available earlier (and better than my Amex PP). Great benefit. I charged $200+ for a lodge stay and got a $200 credit for vacation rentals - also great. I reserved a night at a Hyatt for $30 less than the price on the Hyatt website (but no Hyatt credit for the stay :-( ) on the travel portal. What is the caveat: I really do not like the travel portal for rental cars (forces prepay and higher rates) and I hate having to use the travel portal to get my $300 travel credit thus not getting loyalty benefits for hotels or cars. Ane Hertz is not available on their travel portal. How silly. If they dont stop forcing prepay on car rentals, and also add Hertz, I will likely cancel in a year or two.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ bickleinny -- I hear you, booking hotels and rental cars through the portal sometimes comes with a significant opportunity cost. That being said, if you spend at least $300 per year on airfare, booking flights through the portal seems like the way to go. There's generally zero opportunity cost to booking this way, so that's my plan for using the credit on an ongoing basis.

    2. bickleinny New Member

Thanks for the reply Ben! But there is an opportunity cost from booking your airfare on a portal. I have used the Chase portal for several flight purchases and when there is a flight change, the Chase portal is slow or non-existent in notifications and they make your life miserable when you have to change something! if you buy through the airline website, flight changes are a breeze! Amex is better than Chase, but I have been trying to book with the airlines for the last couple of years...

Not true that there isn't another card open to new applicants that offers free AUs that include a Priority Pass: the Barclays Emirates Premium does (and their PP includes unlimited guests).

If the card is worth getting is another story :-)

  13. OBrien Michael Guest

Tell them that you always pay your balance and you will not be approved…rating at 815+ and 22 cards…history back 40 years. Reason stated: to many credit cards…had reapplication with same result.

  14. Jeff Guest

If I add an authorized user without giving their social security number, can they still get the Priority Pass? Or do they need to have login access to get that? BTW, your multiple posts on this card are helpful and informative since it is new and most sites don't go into the details the way you do. Ignore the haters.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Jeff -- Yep, they should still be able to get a Priority Pass membership. No need for them to have a log-in, as far as I know. Thanks for the kind words! :-)

    2. Mike Saint Guest

Ben is correct. I've added additional cards for family members that are NOT US Citizens. I added my mother in law a card and she got the Priority Pass without a problem.

    3. Jeff Guest

My wife got the VentureX and added me as auth user and my SS was only optional so we didnt put it in. I was approved as auth user if you dont want to add your SS number. I am likely to apply for the card as well, but wanted to try it out before using a 5/24 slot as im at 3/24 or 4/24. Will being an auth user affect my ability to apply?

  15. yeeezy Guest

What is your estimate for how long the Airbnb promo will run?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ yeeezy -- Unfortunately I don't have any inside info there, other than it being "limited time." If I had to guess, I imagine this can't last that much longer, given that the card has been open to new applicants for a couple of months now.

    2. Mike Saint Guest

When I asked they said it won't be offered next year. This is only for the first year and they said it most likely would end soon. I use Airbnb all the time. Both as a traveler and an owner. If you already paid for your airbnb rental and are bummed, something cool is you can pay an owner of an Airbnb for ANYTHING via the platform and just make sure you have this card selected as your default card. And you can pay and still get your $200 credit.

  16. Andrew Diamond

Will probably get this card in the New Year. Do you know how long the 100k offer is available, Ben?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Andrew -- Unfortunately we don't know the end date, sorry. We know that the bonus of 100K miles plus the $200 vacation rental credit are limited time, but nothing beyond that.

    2. Andrew Diamond

Got it. I'll probably do it sooner than later then. Thank you!

Sounds like an awesome card … the issue is when you make everything free for everyone … what happens ?

  18. Aaron Guest

Sounds like a great card, but just got denied despite an excellent credit score.

This is the only reason I got: “Based on your credit report from one or more of the agencies on the back of this letter, there are too many revolving accounts”

Does anyone know what that really means? I am less than 5/24 at this point (I have some cards accumulated but definitely less than many others who got approved)

Capitol One doesn't want you if you have too many other credit cards. It's a indicator for them of you being churner.

This is my first Premium travel card. I looked at CSR and Amex Platinum before deciding that the Vx provided the best value for me. I’m so excited!

  20. Fatima Guest

Thanks for this post. Do you know if the auth user will get Hertz President’s Circle tier status as well or will it be just the primary cardholder? How does getting the PC status work at hertz? More info on this topic would be appreciated.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Fatima -- Yep, even authorized users get it. You can learn more about that in this post:

@ Arun -- It sure will!

  22. AA Flyer Guest

I wonder if Capitol One allows gift cards to count towards the spend requirements?

  23. DenB Diamond

@Ben, please confirm the Hertz Status Benefit. Everyone but you is saying Five Star status, but in this piece you've said authorized users get the top tier "Presidents Circle". If that's accurate, it's a game-changer. Please confirm.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ DenB -- The card does offer Hertz President's Circle status, it's stated right on the application. Yep, I'd say that's pretty exciting.

I've been hesitant to get the Amex Platinum because where we live, the restaurant benefit is something we can take advantage of and they don't offer it (though other lounge access).

Anyways, wondering if at some point you could do a post discussing the overlap of the Sapphire Reserve and the Venture X? Also wondering if Chase is going to be willing to offer any retention bonuses or partial waiver of the annual fee? My fee just came up and I may give them a call to see. For the most useful benefits (for us) I can pay $150 less to access them and get others PP access too.

Thanks Ben! Just read the comparison with CSR article. Was great. I’m looking to max the authorized users out as a gift for those to use the PP benefits. We’re Seattle/Portland based so good restaurant PP options.

Thinking I may call and see if I have any offers on my CSR and if I can get the annual fee down close to the VX I may keep both for the year and then downgrade. If not I’ll downgrade the the CSP. Appreciate all you do with your writing! Love the site.

Ben: I just applied for the Venture X card and was, like you and others, instantly approved. Can you or another reader tell me if the charges made by an authorized user count towards the spend to be awarded the 100,000 mile bonus?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Englishder -- Congrats on getting approved! Yes, spending by the authorized user would count towards the spending requirement to earn the 100,000 bonus miles.

how much for adding 5th authorized user? couldn't find the info anywhere, thanks

  27. Alex Guest

So if my wife adds me as an authorized user without my SSN (basically the limited access version you showed), there is no way this card can show up on my credit report and affect my Chase 5/24 status correct?

If I'm added as a "limited user", do I still get to utilize all the authorized user benefits (i.e. Priority Pass and Cap1 Lounge access, purchase protection, Hertz status, etc)?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Alex -- Authorized users do get all the perks even if they're not an account manager.

As far as the first question goes, you'd think that being added as an authorized user wouldn't show up on your credit report if you don't provide your SSN. Yet so many reports I've seen suggest that it somehow still shows up -- I guess they match it based on an address or something else. So I can't...

    2. Mike Saint Guest

Yes, they can because they use the name, address, etc. Many times they ask to add a DOB. Through trial and error, one thing I've found the best to use is use a fake DOB. Sometimes they will demand a SSN and I just tell them it's for a relative that isn't a US Citizen. So far, no problems.

I'd assume this would work for additional cardholder that actually IS a US Citizen with SSN.

This isn’t sustainable. Lounges will be packed. Maximizes (losers) double dipping with their AU’s at the PP restaurants is going to end this for everyone. “If we leave and go back in, we’ll get another $56!!!!…..”

Do you need to show a boarding pass to enter the Cap One lounge?
For example, can I go in if I land at DFW?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Hal -- I followed up with Capital One on this. The card can only be used within three hours of a departing flight, so the restrictions are similar to Amex.

  30. Tom Guest

@Ben Thank you for the updates! I was grateful to be approved, yesterday. The only benefit that Venture X doesn't seem to have, that I want, is the trip evacuation insurance that both Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve offer. Do you have a list of which cards offer that benefit?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

I think the only thing that I envy with this card since it looked really cool was the the unlimited Capital One Lounge access since my Spark Business Miles card only gets 2 free visits which I find strange that there’s no business card with unlimited entry. Though in fairness I dont fly much through DFW and figure that the times I do the 2 visits will cover it or ill be in one of the lounges I can get in with my Amex platinum card.

@ sxc7885 -- It's a fair point, I think with every card there are questions about what exactly the target market is. I think the same question could be asked about the Amex Platinum, which has a nearly $700 annual fee, but essentially gives you endless coupons.

Personally I think the Venture X is intended to compete with other premium cards, but it's supposed to be even more approachable. It's really easy to maximize value...

It's kind of a moot point what the annual fee is because you get the fee back. Heck, more than the annual fee. You're getting $300 back in travel and $100 with points value. Add in the Airbnb/VRBO rental credit of $200 each year and you're making money.

Anyway, that is reading this blog probably does at least a few trips a year. It's impossible not to recoup the annual fee you are paying...

Anyway, that is reading this blog probably does at least a few trips a year. It's impossible not to recoup the annual fee you are paying so it's really a moot point. EVERYONE should be getting this card. It's a no brainer.

Does adding an authorized user prevent them from getting the SUB on this card later in the future? And does it count against their 5/24 rule?

@ Lech -- Both great questions, and I'll update the post to reflect that. Nope, it doesn't prevent them from getting the card (including the bonus) themselves, but it does count as a further card towards the 5/24 limit (assuming their social security number is linked).

Will there be as many posts this time as there were last year for the Brex card you heavily promoted?

@ Endre -- For the coming days, in all honesty, probably. This is an incredibly lucrative new card, and there's a lot to learn about it (and based on the number of questions I'm getting, there's lots of interest).

I totally get it won't interest everyone, so you're free to skip the posts. The titles will hopefully make it obvious what the post is about -- there will be no clickbait.

I love the fact that your titles are descriptive. There was a travel blog that I followed for years but their titles got less and less descriptive and I finally unsubscribed. Keep up the good work!!

Also love the coverage on the Venture X. As long as it's not overly repetitive, the more info the better.

I like getting 15 users for for free at priority pass and cap lounges .Its like getting the card for 20 dollars a person with useless 300 dollar portal credit . I need to book same day tickets which you cannot do . Some airline elite statuses would be good as well and a juicy retention bonus .

I agree the Capital One Portal is REALLY bad. I've played around with it a bit and I think these are the pros/cons:

      Cons:

      - They advertise the Hertz President's Circle benefit and you can't even use your Hertz # on Capital One's platform! Hertz said it's a third party (the use Hopper platform) and they won't allow you to add your Hertz # to take advantage of President Circle benefits.

      Strange that third-party platforms...

Strange that third-party platforms like Expedia I can put in my Hertz Gold # for benefits.

      - Inventory is wrong a lot of the time. I've tried to book many hotels that are showing up in the search but when I go to pay it gives an error message since the hotel is really not available. (on the plus side they are charging the card and then immediately crediting back but they give you a credit for using the Capital One Travel platform!).

      - Many car rentals are non-refundable rates or best case you have to give them 1/2 days cancellation notice. NO way I'm going to do this with COVID. You never know when you might need to cancel the trip for no fault of your own.

      - Many hotel rentals are prepayable rates or have cancellation policies that require you to give them a lot of notice.

      Pros:

-The prices do seem like they are the lowest and if you find a lower price supposedly you can contact them and they will match it.

      - For the Airbnb credit even if you don't use Airbnb, ask your friends if they do and ask if you can use your card for their rental and they can reimburse you. or actually use it or if you own an Airbnb, I found a hack where you can just "rent to yourself" and get the $200.

      - You can cancel a cancellable booking and I've seen that they reimburse you once the charge is made. They have refunded the fee but I still see the credit on the card so it seems like this is a way you can get the $300 in credits without actually spending it traveling. I'll post a datapoint next month if they took it back. So far on a full billing cycle they haven't.

Sounds like an awesome card … the issue is when you make everything free for everyone … what happens ?

Does VX authorized user get a different card number from primary holder?
